It is a personal honor and pleasure for me to be the Convenor of Hope 2002 – International Conference on Substance Abuse and AIDS/HIV Information and Education. It is a great privilege to welcome this celebrated gathering of professionals from both these fields as a part of Hope 2002.

According to the National Aids Control Organisation there are over 3.97 million cases of HIV infections in India. The problems of HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse have been growing at alarming proportions over the last decade in India, and I have personally seen these problems affecting almost every strata of the social milieu of India. It has been my personal endeavor to combat these problems in any small way that I can and helping organize this conference has been one such step.
It has been a very satisfying experience for me and I hope this conference will help in formulating both a global and an indigenous strategy aimed at combating both the Substance Abuse and AIDS / HIV problems.
